Lost

In a previous post I mentioned the fab Man in Seat 61 website and my dreams of travelling the world by train. Well, I think I need a navigator. I've just discovered I have a Travel IQ of 80, which isn't very good and means that if I set foot out of the UK on my own I will most likely never find my way back.

To find out your own Travel IQ visit the Traveler IQ Challenge - best viewed on Full Screen (makes the map bigger and so increases your chances I reckon)

Good news is My Man has a Travel IQ of 120 so as long as I stick with him I should be fine (maybe this is why he proposed on top of a mountain - he knew I needed him to find the way back down!)

Oh dear, I'm so bad at anything like this! I'll have to get the Welshman on to it - he's great!

Oh, the man in seat 61 was on Radio 4 this morning - fascinating stuff. I've got the urge to go on lots of train journeys now.

Mysterious train stations and lots of notepads and pens - all sounds marvelously Evelyn Waugh, doesn't it?

Helenmh - he sounds like a jolly useful chap to have around

Spiralskies - I missed the R4 program - will have to 'listen again'.
Yes it does sound wonderfully romantic doesn't it - tall dark strangers through the billowing steam, whistles blowing, chance encounters in the buffet car(not sure where my family and our caravan of luggage fits into this scenario but I can dream)

Even if the reality would be a bit more gritty, it's got to be the way forward - trains (and banana boats and bicycles) not planes!

If I could travel the world by train, without ever having to set foot on a plane or a boat, I'd do it! Before the children came along I used visit my family up North by train, and found the experience oddly relaxing and rather wonderful.

Will have to try that ... my sense of direction is rotten, to the shame of my poor dad who was a navigaor in the RAF. Unfortunately I have my Mum's Sense of Direction genes ... like her, I can get lost coming back to the table from the Ladies in a restaurant!

Your profile picture is stunning and your blog is inspiring ... thank you!

Good luck with your writing in 2008 :o)

Karen - I love train travel for that, especially if I am travelling on my own for work or whatever - it provides precious time and space in which there is very little you can do except relax and read and write

Moondreamer -thanks for stopping by and for your lovely comments. Sense of direction is a bizarre thing isn't it - I once got lost in my hometown and my boyfriend who had never been there before guided me home - Reader, I married him.
